Conversion, expansion and new construction

Germany’s Bundeswehr bases were reviewed for expansion or closure around the turn of the millennium. This review opened up future prospects for Holzdorf (in north-eastern Saxony-Anhalt) as a Bundeswehr base for decades to come.

2003 saw a start on planning the engineering for the extensions and the expansion of the tank farm to store 300 m³ of aviation fuel. At the same time, BRUGG was involved in planning new design-approved double-walled supply pipes to fill aircraft and vehicles with fuel. The pipes run:

- from the rail tanker waggon unloading point to overground tanks (140 metres)
- from overground tanks to the tank filling point (387 metres).

Our STAMANT® safety pipe met these demanding requirements.
It took us almost two and a half years to make our seemingly endless way through the bureaucratic jungle. The invitation to tender appeared on the market after this time. Quite a few firms were put off by the 1000 pages of specification text.
The six remaining ones worked their way through this ’bible’ and in mid-2005, they contacted BRUGG with an inquiry for the scope of delivery: 97 metres of DN 50/100 and 430 metres of DN 100/150 for operating pressures up to 16 bar, together with the required accessories for 32 single pipes and 4 pressure monitoring circuits.

GST (Gesellschaft für System- und Tanklagentechnik mbH / System and Tank Equipment Company Ltd) of Cottbus emerged as the winner at the end of December 2005, and they commissioned BRUGG Rohrsysteme GmbH to supply the STAMANT® safety pipe in January 2006.

The pipe was ordered with virtually no transitions; welding and testing was carried out at ISOBRUGG in Arpke and by April of the same year, all the construction units were ready to be transported to the site. However, the frost that lasted until spring postponed the start of building work on all the systems by several weeks.
